Using AI to Plan a Lesson: A Practical Guide for Teachers

AI can make lesson planning faster, but it cannot replace the teacher’s understanding of the classroom. Learn how to use AI to structure lessons, create activities, anticipate misconceptions and differentiate learning—while keeping your professional judgement at the centre.

AI does not have to plan your lesson for you. It can help you plan it better and faster.

One of the biggest mistakes teachers make when using AI for lesson planning is typing:

«“Create a lesson plan on fractions for Year 7.”»

The response may look impressive, but it may not fit your curriculum, your learners, your available time, or your classroom.

The quality of the lesson plan depends heavily on the information you give the AI.

Start With the Lesson, Not the AI

Before opening any AI tool, answer five questions:

• What am I teaching? • What should learners be able to do by the end? • What do they already know? • Where are they likely to struggle? • How much time do I have?

For example:

Subject: Mathematics Class: Year 7 Topic: Algebraic Expressions Duration: 60 minutes Previous knowledge: Basic operations with integers Learning goal: Learners should simplify algebraic expressions by collecting like terms.

Now you have something useful to give the AI.

Give AI a Proper Brief

Instead of asking AI to “write a lesson plan,” give it the role of a planning assistant.

Try a prompt like this:

«“Act as an experienced secondary Mathematics lesson-planning assistant. I am teaching Year 7 Mathematics on simplifying algebraic expressions. The lesson is 60 minutes. Learners already understand integers and basic arithmetic operations but have limited experience with algebraic notation.

Create a lesson structure containing:

  • A 5-minute starter to activate prior knowledge
  • A clear teacher explanation
  • Two worked examples
  • A guided practice activity
  • An independent task with three levels of difficulty
  • Common misconceptions learners may have
  • Questions I can ask to check understanding
  • A 5-minute exit ticket

Keep the activities realistic for a normal classroom and avoid introducing concepts beyond collecting like terms.”»

That is a much better starting point.

Then Do Something Important: Challenge the AI

Do not copy the first response into your lesson plan.

Read it as a teacher.

Ask:

  • Does this match my curriculum?
  • Is the difficulty appropriate?
  • Is the timing realistic?
  • Will my learners understand the examples?
  • Are there misconceptions the AI has missed?
  • Can I actually carry out these activities with the resources available?
  • Does the assessment measure the learning objective?

This is where the teacher remains essential.

AI can suggest a 10-minute activity.

You know whether your class can realistically complete it in 10 minutes.

AI can generate examples.

You know which examples will expose the misconception your learners usually make.

AI can structure a lesson.

You understand the learners sitting in front of you.

Use AI for Differentiation

This is one of the most useful applications.

Suppose your class has learners working at different levels.

You can ask:

«“Create three sets of practice questions on simplifying algebraic expressions: support, core and extension. Keep all three aligned with the same learning objective.”»

You could then get:

Support: Simple expressions such as "3x + 2x"

Core: Expressions such as "5x + 3 - 2x + 7"

Extension: Expressions requiring learners to reason about missing values or explain why two expressions are equivalent.

Now you are not creating three completely different lessons.

You are creating different entry points to the same learning objective.

Use AI to Predict Misconceptions

This is another area where AI can save preparation time.

Ask:

«“What are five common misconceptions Year 7 learners may have when collecting like terms? For each misconception, give me a diagnostic question I can use during the lesson.”»

This can help you prepare for mistakes before they happen.

For example, a learner may incorrectly simplify:

"3x + 2 = 5x"

The issue is not simply that the learner got the answer wrong. They may not understand the difference between like terms and unlike terms.

That insight should influence what you teach next.

Turn the Lesson Plan Into Teaching Resources

Once your lesson structure is ready, AI can help you create the supporting materials.

You can ask it to generate:

  • A starter activity
  • Worked examples
  • Guided practice
  • Differentiated worksheets
  • Homework
  • Exit tickets
  • Retrieval questions
  • Quiz questions
  • Marking schemes
  • Questions for classroom discussion

But don't ask AI to create everything at once.

Build the lesson in stages.

A better workflow is:

Curriculum → Learning objective → Lesson structure → Activities → Assessment → Resources

This gives you much more control over the final lesson.

A Simple AI Lesson-Planning Workflow

You can make this part of your weekly routine:

Step 1 — Provide the context Class, subject, topic, duration, curriculum and learner level.

Step 2 — Define the outcome Tell AI exactly what learners should know or be able to do.

Step 3 — Generate the lesson structure Ask for activities, explanations and assessment.

Step 4 — Identify misconceptions Ask AI to predict likely errors and suggest diagnostic questions.

Step 5 — Differentiate Create support, core and extension activities.

Step 6 — Create resources Generate questions, worksheets, slides or exit tickets.

Step 7 — Review everything Check accuracy, curriculum alignment, difficulty and timing.

Step 8 — Add your teacher knowledge Replace generic examples with examples that make sense for your learners.

That final step matters.

Don't Let AI Remove Your Voice

A lesson plan should not sound like it was written by a machine.

Add the examples you normally use.

Add the question your learners always struggle with.

Add the local context they understand.

Add the activity that has worked in your classroom before.

Add your own explanation.

AI can help you prepare the lesson. It cannot know your classroom the way you do.

The goal is not:

“AI planned my lesson.”

The goal is:

“AI helped me spend less time preparing and more time thinking about how my learners will actually learn.”

That is a much more useful way to bring AI into teaching.
